SUPERMAN ON THE ISSUES Strong Leaders, not Helpless Clients For too long, the government of Washington D.C. has focused on providing services instead of empowering citizens. This perpetuates helplessness, and reinforces inequality.Superman provides an alternative. Superman will inspire and challenge citizens to become community leaders by providing training to community members. In this way, previously unengaged citzens will become organizers and leaders with political efficacy instead of political apathy. Communities are then more able to advocate on their own behalf, also allowing Washington DC officials to be better informed of their constituency’s needs. America First True to his Midwestern roots, Superman supports making the United States of America always first on country drop-down forms. We just can't afford to let San Marino beat us any longer. Institute Term LimitsSuperman wishes to apologize for Superman III and Superman IV. Affordable Housing The affordable housing issue in D.C. is rooted in the policy of “mixed use” developments in lower-income neighborhoods. Although these mixed use developments are required to include affordable housing for the pre-development residents, many times they lead instead to the displacement of lower-income residents. Recent school closings have exacerbated this trend. Despite its flaws, we cannot entirely oppose mixed use developments. It is a matter of making citizen happiness a priority. Superman supports careful development that will attract businesses and lower unemployment. This would increase tax revenues as well as raising each citizen’s standard of living. Protect Our ValuesSuperman believes in moderation. While he lent his name to Three Doors Down for their break-out hit, Superman feels the pain of those struggling truckers who felt it was overplayed. As an All-American hero, Superman believes that a strong committment to ethical action, and will apply his small-town committment to community, equality, and independence to the often-divided city of Washington, D.C. Improve Access to CommunicationIf elected, Superman will take a stand against the disappearance of telephone booths in downtown, ensuring all citizens will have the tools they need to survive in the Communication Age. Safe Streets, Neighbor by Neighbor Community safety depends on community responsibility. Superman salutes the Orange Hats of Fairlawn, a true community of citizens that organized daily street-watches, forcing drug drug crimes into retreat on their own turf. Previously suspicious of law enforcement, the Orange Hats gained the respect and eventually built relationships with their local police officers, leading to a mutually beneficial relationship. Local tips from watchful community members alerted police to crimes, allowing police to more efficiently fight crime, making the neighborhood safer for all. Superman plans to build such symbiotic relationships between citizens and law enforcement, making streets safer for our neighbors’ children and our own. Fight for Justice and the American WayAs an all-American hero, Superman opposes taxation without representation and fully supports District of Columbia statehood.Support Superboys and SupergirlsSuperman believes that children are more than sidekicks: they are our future. Mentoring, education, and instilling super self-esteem keep kids off the street and up in the sky.Make DC Faster than a Speeding Bullet (Train)The Man of Steel knows steel, and knows that Metro cars need to be updated or replaced for public safety. He believes that a mayor has a responsibility to prevent those emergencies with new technology, maintenance, and occasionally using his own body as a track. Superman will pledge at least $6 million to make the Metro better, faster, and stronger than before.Support LBGTQS (Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Queer, and Superhero) RightsSuperman’s recent decision to come out of the closet as an Alien American has reinforced his belief that all people, regardless of their identity, have the right to be out, proud, and super. Superman believes in personal freedom and opposes unncessary government intervention into the lives of American citizens.
